May 27, 2010- We went back to the track last night for Wednesday Night Test n’ Tune. And Test/Tune we did.
We weren’t getting the ET’s and 60′ times that we were looking for. The car was wadding up the tires then spinning them off the line, so we went down air pressure. We had 7psi on the first 2 runs and went down to 6.5psi for the second 2 runs. However, this did not help the launch at all, and may have actually worsened it. On the third pass, we took the launch chip out, thinking that we weren’t building enough RPM for the launch, and left on the convertor. Additionally, we also went from a #2 rear shock setting to a #4. The result was that it spun the tires worse and really slowed down. So we put the chip back in it for the fourth pass, but left the shocks at #4.
All through the night we were changing jets. We started with .089 primary and .090 secondary jets for the first run, moved up to .092 primary and .093 secondary jets for the second and third runs, and made the fourth run with .094 jets on both ends.
Using the video taken of each run, we built a preliminary setup for Friday night’s test session. We went up 5 turns on the wheelie bars, as we believe the car is bucking onto them during the 1-2 shift. Secondly, we went back and put .093 jets on both ends of the carburetor, because our best pass (#2) was with the .092/.093 combination. Finally, we added 2 hexaturns of preload to the right rear ladder bar, to try and make the right rear bite harder.
We also believe that going down in rear air pressure was a bad idea. For Friday’s test session, we are going to start at 7 psi and work our way up, in half-pound increments. Additionally, via the video data, we have found that the car is shifting somewhere between 200 and 264 feet. We are going to play with the shift point a little, and see what our times look like when we go higher and lower with it, to help zone in on the optimal shift RPM. If we like what we find Friday, we will probably hit the track again on sunday.
May 16, 2010- After a rained out Friday, we tried to go to the track today. Tried isn’t the right term- we went to the track today, but no further. Loading onto the trailer at the house, we found that the car was rolling a little more than it should when the brake was applied. When we went to unload at the track, the car simply did not want to stop. So after making a quick brake analysis, we found that the fronts were functioning normally, but that the rears had no hydraulic pressure. We even opened the bleed screws on both rear drums, and recieved no fluid what-so-ever with the brake pedal pressed. So we loaded back up (carefully), came home, and removed the entire rear brake hydraulic circuit.
We have found that the Master Cylinder had something fail internally, as we are only getting fluid from the front port when we bench bleed it. Thus, a new master cylinder as well as all the rear hard lines is in order.
We will leave the stock Mustang2 front disks and Dana 60 rear drums on the car for now, until we can afford the Wilwood 4 disk upgrade.
Also, the complete Nitrous system is still for sale, LenMar did not take our offer. We are asking $1200 OBO for the entire kit- 454-R edelbrock intake, 250 fogger, 175 plate, both bottles, 1 bottle heater, 2 electrical solenoids, 2 actuation relayes, all the fuel and NOS flow solenoids (mounted to intake manifolds), all wiring, a dual bottle mount (designed to go in seat), and everything in-between. Send me an email at
if you are interested in buying.
May 12, 2010- Fuel Filter and second fuel jug should come today from Jeg’s. Waiting to hear from LenMar MotorSports to see if they’re going to buy the nitrous system off us, we’re offering $1200, the intake + electrical + plumbing + intake would be an easy $2000+ new.
We get our fuel from LenMar, $8 a gallon for VP C112. Sonoco Purple is $6/gal but we can’t find any distributors. We bought 5 gallons last friday- we’re out and the tank is dry. It drank all 5 gallons just to do the test and tune all weekend in the garage . It’s a thirsty little 440.
Weather permitting, we’re going to the track this weekend. Friday is Pro-Modifieds, Saturday is the monthly Bracket Race, Sunday is run what you brung and grudge racing. Hopefully somewhere in there, we’ll be able to get 3 or 4 runs in. Track Calendar
May 02, 2010- Alot of progress has been made this week. As of right now, May 15th is our target day to get the car on-track at Kennedale/Texas Raceway. We’ve done the leakdown test, ordered an NHRA competition number, removed any evidence that the car ever had NOS on it (BTW- the complete NOS system is for sale/trade, email me an offer at the address below), all we have left is to flush the coolant and fuel systems. We intend to run the car with as few decals as possible, but removing them is not an emergency task. As we’ve been digging through the car and recording numbers and general data, we’ve been finding some inconsistencies, which we have been trying to correct them as we can, in the order of urgency.
